Y&M
Days that Deepen Bonds
The bridegroom likes making things by hand and sincerely faces something until he is satisfied with it. The bride warmly watches over the bridegroom and supports him at his side. When we inquired with the couple after they had tied the knot, they said that through their wedding day preparations, they felt, “The life the two of us will lead from now on will surely proceed in this manner.”
The first wedding day. The item that the couple chose for dinner this day, which they would spend with their parents, was gyoza (pot stickers), which had often been set out on the dining table ever since they were children. After the couple checked in, the first thing they did was they went out shopping for dinner. While smiling, they told us, “Today, we will make gyoza (pot stickers) as a family.” After that, their parents gathered, and everyone crowded the kitchen and made gyoza (pot stickers). The families both liked alcohol, so it appears that both the conversations and the alcohol moved ahead. Before both families spent such time, it appears that no one could readily imagine both of the families sitting around a dining table. However, the families spent their time very naturally.
The second wedding day. The couple performed the ceremony, the bride dressed in a white kimono, the bridegroom dressed in a kimono with his hakama (pleated trousers) decorated with his family crest. The dress code of the attendees, including the bridegroom and bride, was the unification of white and black. For the so-called cake-cutting tradition, the couple would be dressed in kimonos, so they requested an original ceremony, telling us, “We want to do this with dango (dumplings)!” For the ceremony, the couple poured mitarashi an (bean paste mixed with a soy-and-sugar syrup) over skewered dango (dumplings) packed into the shape of a pyramid. The ceremony brought smiles to the faces of all the guests, of course, and us MAYA staff members, too. For the Oironaoshi (change of wardrobes), the bride had changed into a dress, and the bridegroom had changed into a matching white top and bottom, and they entered from the garden. During the check-in, each guest had been given a bottle opener labeled with the guest’s name. With each guest carrying a bottle opener, a bottle of a brand of cola that the bride loved was handed out to each guest, and there was one more toast toward the second half. After the reception wrapped up, the couple held a nijikai (after-party) with drinks and snacks that they had made arrangements for and pulled an all-nighter with everyone.
The third wedding day. In the dining room, which was basking in the afterglow of the day before, the bridegroom very happily told us that friends of his that he had always wanted to introduce to each other hit it off together just as he had expected and that friends of his that met for the first time left together after the nijikai (after-party). Thus, we remember that hearing what he told us warmed our hearts. On the couple’s wedding days, the bonds between the families, friends, and the couple became even stronger and more secure. We, the staff members at MAYA, are very happy to have helped from nearby with those two nights and three days.
